BURLINGTON, ONT. — A planned overhaul of Burlington’s Drury Lane pedestrian bridge is underway with Metrolinx and the city working together to execute replacing the current bridge, which is nearing the end of its service life, with a new unique look.
The new bridge is slated to improve pedestrian access, make the bridge Accessibility for Ontarians with Disabilities Act compliant, allow Metrolinx to provide more frequent and faster train service and accommodate future electrification of the rail corridor.
Beginning this month crews will set up a construction site, including storage containers and facilities beside the existing pedestrian bridge. Fencing will also be installed and a small subdrainage connection will be required on the south side of the bridge.
Other preparatory activities include clearing and grubbing in the railway corridor, excavation, grading and the installation of temporary light poles.
During the weekend of March 7 to 10 demolition of existing bridge will commence, which will involve cutting and grinding the bridge into manageable pieces. They will then be lifted into the construction area using a crane, explains a release.
Metrolinx states it is committed to recycling as much of the material as possible.
Further in March, the concrete foundations will be removed by excavators with jackhammer attachments to chip and crush the concrete.Â
Additionally, drilling caissons for the foundations on the south side of the pedestrian bridge will take place.
