Hamilton shooting victim identified as IBEW apprentice
HAMILTON POLICE — Aaron Stone, 28, a fifth-year apprentice with the IBEW, and his fiancée Carissa MacDonald, 27, were shot and killed in Hamilton on May 27.

Members of IBEW Local 105 in Hamilton are currently reeling from the news that a 28-year-old apprentice from the local was shot and killed in a bizarre incident on May 27.

Aaron Stone, 28, a fifth-year apprentice, and his fiancée Carissa MacDonald, 27, were shot by the landlord of the house they were living in after 5 p.m. on Saturday afternoon in what was described as a landlord-tenant dispute. They were living in the basement of the home at Jones Road in Stoney Creek in east Hamilton.

Stone was a third-generation IBEW member. Hamilton police said the family requested privacy at this time and Local 105 business manager Steve Fox said the local was heartbroken as well, with mental health support offered to members.

Local 105 has 1,100 members.

During the May 27 incident, the 57-year-old landlord barricaded himself in the residence with firearms that were registered to him, Hamilton police said. The Hamilton Police Emergency Response Unit contained the area, while negotiators engaged in contact with the landlord in an attempt to peacefully resolve the incident.

At one point during the negotiations, the suspect fired at the Hamilton police armoured vehicle. The suspect later fired additional rounds, which resulted in an interaction with police.

The Special Investigations Unit invoked its mandate and is investigating.
