Orlando Aponte

TORONTO — A GoFundMe page has been set up to support the family of a construction worker who died working on the Ashbridges Bay Water Treatment Plant on Aug. 17.

Orlando Aponte, his wife and four children had moved to Canada from Venezuela in 2012 in search of a better life, the GoFundMe post stated.

“These last 11 years, for our father there was nothing more important than dedicating himself and striving to be able to provide the best opportunities for his family. He worked long hours, multiple jobs, often sacrificing his own comfort for the sake of our well-being,” the message stated.

It was attributed to Annie, Andres, Adrian and Alfonso, the children, and Julissa, his wife.

Orlando Aponte reportedly fell about 100 feet. Emergency crews arrived at the scene around 11:30 a.m. and pronounced him dead.

The reported employer is North Tunnel Constructors and the incident is linked to the Coxwell Bypass Tunnel project. A statement from Jay Dee Contractors, managing member of North Tunnel Constructors, issued a statement expressing condolences.

“We are deeply saddened to confirm a tragic fatality that occurred earlier today at this site, the Coxwell Bypass Tunnel construction project,” said Mike DiPonio, president, Jay Dee Contractors, Inc., Livonia, Michigan/Jay Dee Contractors of Canada, in a statement the day of the incident.

“Our thoughts and prayers go out to the family, friends and colleagues during this incredibly difficult time. We intend to fully understand the circumstances that led to this incident and will provide all necessary support to ensure a thorough and transparent review.

“We are also offering grief counselling and support to our employees who are affected by this incident.”

The GoFundMe appeal indicated funds donated would go to Julissa Aponte.

“Your generosity will not only alleviate our financial burden but also remind us that we are not alone on this journey of healing and growth.”

As of Aug. 25, over $24,000 had been raised.

The Ministry of Labour, Immigration, Training and Skills Development is investigating the incident.
