TORONTO — (LOC) members are leading the way when it comes to strong health and safety performance.
At an event billed Improving your Health and Safety Culture May 28, the LOC recognized about 50 members with Zero Lost Time Injury Frequency Awards.
“Today the League is going to recognize members who succeeded in reducing and in many cases eliminating lost time injuries,” LOC executive director David Frame told the crowd at the event. “Fifty-one of our members had zero lost time injuries last year which, for a construction company working in the construction environment, zero lost time injuries in any given year is a big achievement.”
Part of the league’s mission is to improve health and safety in workplaces across Ontario.
“We’re the League of Champions, we call ourselves champions which speaks to success,” Frame noted. “One of the things we took on this year is we said, ‘How do we know we’re good?’ We do things that we know make a difference in health and safety but how do we prove that we are successful and how do we measure it.”
They started an initiative to measure the performance of their members and enlisted the help of the Workplace Safety and Insurance Board (WSIB). The LOC wanted to track member performance to confirm the commitment and demonstrate the success of the program.
“WSIB has done a great job of putting accident reports together through their Compass profiles,” said Frame. “We went to them and we gave them the League of Champions as a set for performance and we asked them to measure how we were doing in terms of a number of things including lost time injuries.”
The WSIB 2023 LTI frequency was used since it includes lost time injuries and man hours.
It found the 78 contractors from the LOC as a group had a combined lost time injury frequency of .13, while the other six construction rates range from 1.69 to .58.
The WSIB’s schedule 1, which includes employers in all covered industries except for many governments and their agencies, has a rate of .98.
“The League of Champions outperformed everybody…by an outstanding margin,” said Frame.
At the event, the awards were handed out to the members of the companies with zero lost time injuries.
