Cornerstone Suites opens in Mississauga, provides supportive housing in community
INDWELL - Cornerstone Suites, a supportive housing development in Streetsville, Ont., recently celebrated its grand opening. The project is by Indwell, in partnership with Peel Region.

MISSISSAUGA, ONT. –  Cornerstone Suites celebrated the grand opening of a new development which is bringing 40 supportive housing units to Mississauga, Ont.’s Streetsville neighbourhood.

The grand opening was held recently for the project by Indwell, a provider of supportive affordable housing Ontario, in partnership with Peel Region. The facility marks Indwell’s second program in the region. This year Indwell is celebrating its 50th anniversary of providing supportive housing in the province.

Tenants began moving in last month and will have access to integrated supports provided by a professional staff team, including nursing, psychosocial care, food security, mental health and addiction services, housing assistance and on-site facilities and maintenance staff, indicates a release.

The building and streetscape incorporate two 19th-century heritage listed homes, blending historical preservation with modern efficiencies built to the Passive House standard. The surrounding landscaping features native plants, enhancing the connection to the natural environment.

The independent studio apartments, 10 of which are barrier-free, are fully furnished and feature their own kitchen and bathroom. Tenants will have access to shared common spaces, including a third-floor patio and a gathering area with a servery, designed to accommodate up to 40 people. The amenities will host food security programs, community meetings, and programming activities for tenants.

Peel Region has been instrumental in making Cornerstone Suites a reality, providing support and funding to help address the urgent need for affordable supportive housing in the area, the release states.

The project received funding from CMHC’s Rapid Housing Initiative (RHI) as well as the Province’s Social Services Relief Fund.

“The only way we can effectively address Peel’s affordable housing crisis is by working together and creating more housing options that are aligned with community need,” said Nando Iannicca, Region of Peel chair, in a statement. “Cornerstone Suites is yet another example of a successful collaboration that positively impacts vulnerable residents. I look forward to working together on more housing projects.”
