HAMILTON, ONT. — A historic moment for a historic building transformation.
Two years after starting construction, Canlight Group recently celebrated the topping off of its 14-storey Radio Arts project in Hamilton, Ont. by laying the highest beam.
Located at 206 King St. W. at the corner of Caroline Street, the project “honours the cultural footprint of the former CHIQ-AM radio station while providing new opportunities to be part of downtown’s growing community,” states a release.
The building’s original character played a large part in the project’s design, with brick and beam architecture playing a prominent role.
The four-storey podium is an homage to the 1908 building design with its masonry details and arched windows, the release continues.
Rising from the podium is a residential tower with staggered balconies and black and white cladding.
The project team includes Canlight Group, Milborne Group, Baudit Interior Design and KNYMH Architects.
“I wanted Radio Arts to reflect Hamilton’s youthful energy, spirit and optimism.” says Vernon Shaw, founder of Canlight Group, in a statement.
“Back in the ‘60s a brick building at the corner of King and Caroline broadcasting soft jazz and classic piano was deemed ‘Hamilton’s New Love’ CHIQ-AM. This building has played such an important part in the history of this city, I’m excited that it will continue its presence, be enjoyed by residents and be loved once again.”
