Gensler identifies 8 trends shaping design in 2024

SAN FRANCISCO — San Francisco-based architectural firm Gensler has released its Design Forecast identifying eight trends and opportunities for the building industry in 2024.

A release stated the forecast will help the real estate and building industry leaders deal with such hurdles as economic pressures, geopolitical volatility, climate change, the workplace reset, inclusivity and the continuing need to manage aging buildings and stranded assets.

Design is “unique in its ability to solve problems and create results. Using systems thinking and a compassionate understanding of people’s needs and expectations, designers can make sense of complex challenges to create lasting solutions,” stated the release.

The 8 Trends Shaping Design in 2024 is a new feature in the Gensler Design Forecast:

  • Building conversions become a new value proposition.
  • Sustainable design becomes a non-negotiable.
  • In: The future of the workplace. Out: Return to office metrics.
  • Mixed-use lifestyle districts bring cities back to life.
  • Designers harness AI to accelerate ideas and innovation.
  • Focus shifts to ageless spaces and design for a lifetime.
  • 20-minute cities become archetypes of equity and accessibility.
  • Experience multipliers pay premium dividends.
