VICTORIA, B.C. — The British Columbia Road Builders and Heavy Construction Association (BCRB&HCA) is going to shine a light on highway maintenance jobs thanks to a $3.9 million grant.
“Our government is funding this skills training so that more people can get good in-demand jobs in the highway maintenance and roadbuilding industry,” said Sheila Malcolmson, minister of social development and poverty reduction, in a news release.
The grant, spread over three years, will fund the BCRB&HCA’s talent attraction program. The program focuses on hiring, training and retaining new employees by showcasing the industry through innovative training technologies.
The program uses simulation technology to put jobseekers in the driver’s seat of heavy equipment such as snowplows. The program will be taken on the road across the province with a customized 34-foot trailer filled with five different simulators.
Participants will receive a certificate of participation. The program is expected to launch in spring 2024.
