Manitoba announces 2023 Apprenticeship Awards of Distinction winners

WINNIPEG – Apprenticeship Manitoba honoured two businesses and three individuals during the 17th annual Awards of Distinction hosted by the Apprenticeship and Certification Board at the RBC Convention Centre in Winnipeg recently.

The annual event celebrates the outstanding contributions made by the province’s employers, journeypersons and instructors while raising the public profile of apprenticeship and certification in the skilled trades in Manitoba, a Manitoba release said.

Bockstael Construction Ltd. won in the employer of the year (urban) category and Paradise Landscape and Design won in the rural sub-category. Guy Dowhy of Red River College Polytechnic won in the instructor of the year category and Sam Yoshida of TENTEN Kitchen won journeyperson of the year (urban) while R. Gerald Smith of Chown Electric Ltd took the rural award.

“I was honoured to celebrate the journeypersons, instructors and employers who work tirelessly to support the next generation of skilled tradespersons,” said Minister of Economic Development, Investment, Trade and Natural Resources Minister Jamie Moses in the release.

“Building the skilled trades workforce in Manitoba is critical to building a strong, prosperous future for our province.”

A call for nominations earlier in the year resulted in 37 nominees from colleagues, apprentices and community members and a selection committee comprised of Apprenticeship and Certification Board members and Apprenticeship Manitoba staff selected the recipients, the release said.
