SASKATOON, SASK. — Two reports were presented to Saskatoon’s Governance and Priorities Committee (GPC), laying the groundwork for the vision of a Downtown Event and Entertainment District and a revitalized downtown area.
These reports offer insights into the community’s aspirations for the district and analyze the market context for its future development.
According to a recent press release issued by the city, the first report details the results of the Phase I Engagement of the project, conducted from April 17 to May 18.
This phase focused on gathering public feedback on desired amenities and improvements for the district.
Various methods, including stakeholder meetings, pop-up locations, an engagement kit and surveys were utilized, drawing responses from 3,134 individuals. The report emphasizes ongoing targeted engagement with Indigenous leaders, Elders, and Knowledge Keepers, with broader public engagement on the conceptual design expected in 2024.
The second report, conducted by Stantec, the city’s technical adviser, focuses on the Downtown Market Analysis of Housing and Retail Demand. Key findings suggest a strong housing market, with a goal of adding 200 residential units annually, aiming to grow the downtown population to 10,000 over the next two decades.
Lesley Anderson, director of planning and development, noted the growth in downtown housing would likely lead to a significant rise in consumer spending, thereby creating demand for more retail and commercial development.
Looking forward, the journey towards realizing this district includes presenting concept plans for the event centre/arena, convention centre, and public spaces to city council in early 2024. This will also encompass a report on draft funding and the initial version of the district plan, outlining the broader vision for downtown Saskatoon.
