In this week’s episode of TCR Express, digital media editor Warren Frey talks to Journal of Commence staff writer Russell Hixson about some of the stories he’s recently worked on and some of the news he’ll be covering in the near future.
Russell recently attended the Canadian Construction Association’s “Virtually Unstoppable” conference and said one of the most interesting sessions he attended drew on expertise from construction associations from around the globe on tackling the challenges facing their industries. Amongst the key points of the session were comments by Associated General Contractors of America CEO Stephen Sandifer who said sorely needed investment in infrastructure will likely be stalled by partisan political goals. Australian Constructors Association CEO Jon Davies also pointed at his own country’s “appalling” reputation regarding diversity and said it was vital the Australian industry address inclusion of women and minorities into the workforce.
Russell also previewed a story he’s working on from the CCA conference where association president Mary Van Buren sat down with federal minister of employment, workforce development and disability inclusion Carla Qualtrough. The minister hinted at infrastructure spending in the upcoming April budget and how the federal government wants to not merely build projects but also ensure those projects encourage inclusion and create opportunity and empowerment for underrepresented groups.
