Open house being held for Welland Thorold powerline project

WELLAND, ONT. — On Tuesday, Nov. 19, Hydro One will be hosting an open house to share details about the Welland Thorold powerline project in an effort to gather feedback from Indigenous communities, elected officials, property owners, businesses, residents and other interest groups.

Stretching approximately 18 kilometres from the Crowland Transformer Station in Welland to an existing transmission line in Thorold, the proposed project is expected to add 400 megawatts of capacity to the grid, explains a release.

The open house will be held at the Royal Canadia Legion at 383 Morningstar Ave. in Welland from 2 to 7 p.m.

The project is being proposed because electricity demands in Niagara Region are expected to increase by approximately 20 per cent between now and 2032. Ontario’s Independent Electricity System Operator has recommended the new transmission line come into service no later than 2029.
