Ontario’s unionized rodworkers working in the ICI sector have ratified the latest deal offered by their employers, voting 68 per cent on a three-year deal that gives them double-digit raises over the length of the contract.
The ratification votes took place yesterday (June 20) at union headquarters across the province with all but one local supporting the proposed deal. Members had previously rejected a negotiated offer.
Under the terms of the contract, workers at locals across most of the province will earn a wage hike of 11 per cent over the three years of the contract – four per cent, three per cent and four per cent. The first-year raise is effective as of the ratification date.
Toronto members, affiliated with Local 721, will receive a premium of 0.5 per cent in the second year, making their total pay increase 11.5 per cent over three years.
Local 786 based in Sudbury voted against the offer.
Neither the union nor the employer negotiators offered comment on the settlement.
Three-year collective agreements for Ontario’s 25 ICI trades expired April 30. A majority of the trades have settled on 2022-2025 contracts.
Elsewhere in the sector, glaziers are into their second week of strike action while painters and tapers walked off the job on Monday (June 20). All are members of the International Union of Painters and Allied Trades. No new talks have been scheduled in either sector.
Glaziers picketed a jobsite at 150 Front St. in Toronto today (June 21).
Insulators are also contemplating a strike after talks have broken down. The results of a strike vote will be tabulated June 24. There are no further bargaining meetings currently scheduled.
Sprinkler fitters are voting on a second proposed deal reached by their union negotiators with employers after national negotiations. Only the vote from Nova Scotia members remained to be tabulated and the results are expected to be announced today (June 21).
