Trades students invited to apply for CAWIC bursaries

MISSISSAUGA, ONT. — The Canadian Association of Women in Construction (CAWIC), a not-for-profit organization supporting women in the Canadian construction industry, is awarding bursaries to students.

Students enrolled in construction-related programs are invited to apply. This year, the deadline has been extended to Aug. 31.

One of CAWIC’s mandates is to promote education and encourage women to pursue careers in the construction industry, states the CAWIC website, adding each year the association organizes several fundraising events and a portion of the proceeds are allocated to the bursary fund. CAWIC’s Bursary Committee will select the successful recipients from a list of applicants chosen based on meeting the required criteria.

CAWIC is offering a number of $2,000 bursaries to female students enrolled in construction-related studies at Canadian post-secondary institutions.

Minimum qualifications are:

  • The applicant must identify as a woman;
  • completion of at least the first year of a diploma or degree program at a college or university and full-time enrolment in the subsequent year or minimum enrolled in a one-year trades program;
  • demonstrate clear career objectives relating to the construction industry;
  • evidence of financial need;
  • leadership qualities and involvement in community activities;
  • interest in activities that further the advancement of women in construction; and
  • Canadian citizenship or permanent resident status.

Six $1,000 bursaries are available to those studying in a trades program as part of the Cooper Bursary for Women in Construction. The bursary is open to women from British Columbia, Alberta, Ontario, Quebec, New Brunswick and Nova Scotia.

Students who wish to apply for a CAWIC bursary must submit the following minimum documentation:

  • A Completed application form;
  • two letters of reference, at least one from a current college or university instructor. Letters from family members are not acceptable. CAWIC may contact references;
  • the most recent grade transcript; and
  • a cover letter describing career objectives in the construction industry as well as the areas in which they intend to participate in CAWIC activities.
