Alberta sees record housing starts in 2024

EDMONTON – Monthly data from the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) indicates Alberta is on track for a record number of housing starts this year.

January to August has seen almost 30,000 new homes under construction, a 44 per cent increase over last year, a release said.

“With a provincewide year-to-date increase of 44 per cent and strong growth in rental construction, Alberta continues to be on pace for one of the most productive years on record. Continued collaborative efforts between industry and all levels of government will be essential to addressing the rising demand for diverse, attainable housing options for all Albertans,” BILD Alberta Association CEO Scott Fash said in a statement.

In Edmonton there were 11,924 starts compared with 8,015, a 49 per cent increase and in Calgary housing starts measured 15,324 compared to 11,407, up 34 per cent.

The release also detailed that as of June 30 the Alberta government has committed $182.4 million to 1,235 units of affordable housing that have not yet been constructed and $66.8 million to 451 units of affordable housing that are currently under construction.

Approximately $52.1 million has been put toward 250 units of affordable housing that have been completed since December 2023.
