Central Alberta seniors home wins concrete award
WWW.CPCI.CA — Charis Village is a not-for-profit organization that provides senior housing for faith-based residents in the City of Lacombe, Alta.

An Alberta seniors’ home has won the October 2024 Canadian Precast/Prestressed Concrete Institute (CPCI) project of the month award.

The not-for-profit seniors’ home, which is located in Lacombe, between Red Deer and Edmonton, is operated by the Charis Village organization.

Charis Village is a community where seniors can age with grace (charis means grace) in a residence where their social, spiritual, physical and emotional needs are looked after.

Charis Village required a new building to meet the growing demand in the region for seniors housing.

It was therefore important that the new structure was designed and put up quickly, which it was.

It took but 10 days to produce the precast concrete wall panels, only 24 days to produce the precast concrete hollow core and just 45 days to erect the shell.

Total construction time was eight months.

Aside from the roof, the entire structure, including the parking garage, walls and floors, is made of precast concrete.

A total of 660 insulated precast concrete wall panels and 812 precast concrete hollow core panels were used to build the seniors’ home.

The Charis Village building contains 46 units and a below-grade parking garage.

Building with precast concrete provided extra fire protection, enabled rapid construction of the home and meant lower annual maintenance and operational costs.

Eagle Builders LLP of Blackfalds, Alta. designed and built the four-storey complex.

Grubb Engineering of Red Deer County provided expertise on a wide range of precast concrete products, including columns, inverted tee beams, composite slabs and hollow core.
