EDMONTON — As the year comes to a close, the Alberta government is touting a successful 2024 when it comes to housing starts.
According to a release, housing starts rose to 42,954, a 35 per cent increase over the same period last year, leading Canada with the highest per capita housing starts in the country from January-November.
Across the province Edmonton saw a 48 per cent increase with 16,939 starts compared with 11,427 last year; Calgary, 22,652 compared with 18,086 (up 25 per cent); and Red Deer, 342 compared with 180 (up 90 per cent).
The first half of 2024 also saw 9,903 apartment unit starts, which is the highest in any half-year in Alberta’s history. This broke the record set previously in 1977.
“Alberta’s government continues to support builders and encourage new residential housing construction by cutting red tape, incentivizing housing construction and supporting innovative strategies to build homes faster than ever,” explains the release.
One way the government states it is doing so is through the newly launched Stop Housing Delays online portal for developers and municipal authorities. It was created to help identify areas that are preventing fast and efficient residential construction.
“With a 35 per cent increase in housing starts over the first 11 months of 2024, Alberta’s housing sector is on a strong upward trajectory,” said Scott Fash, CEO of the BILD Alberta Association, in a statement.
“BILD Alberta is committed to working with government and municipal partners to maintain this momentum, reduce barriers, and accelerate development to meet the growing demand for homes across the province.”
