$50,000 architecture prize up for grabs
JOHNNY C Y LAM—Ecological designer Nina-Marie Lister was last year’s winner of the Margolese Prize. The $50,000 prize honours a Canadian designer whose work in the built environment improves the lives of people and their communities.

VANCOUVER, B.C.—Calling all architects, landscape architects, and urban designers.

The School of Architecture and Landscape Architecture (SALA) at the University of British Columbia (UBC) is now accepting nominations for the 2022 Margolese Design for Living Prize.

The $50,000 prize highlights a Canadian designer whose work “uplifts people, places and communities.”

To be eligible, candidates must have Canadian citizenship and be early to mid-career professionals whose design practice and advocacy demonstrates a wide environmental and social impact across a diversity of design disciplines including architecture, landscape architecture and urban design.

“We are proud to host the Margolese Design for Living Prize, which extends SALA’s ambition to inspire the next generation of designers to positively shape the future through their work,” said SALA director Ron Kellett in a statement.

Nominations will be until April 10. Candidates can nominate themselves or be nominated by others.

A peer jury will review the candidates and release a list of finalists at the end of April. The winner will be announced in September. An event to celebrate the winner and award the $50,000 prize will be held in October.

The Margolese Prize was created 10 years ago from an estate gift to UBC by the late Leonard Herbert Margolese. In 2021, the award was given to ecological designer Nina-Marie Lister, whose transdisciplinary research and practice involves integrated designs that connect cities, landscapes, people and nature.
