Port Coquitlam advancing flood protection upgrades at several pump stations

PORT COQUITLAM, BC – The City of Port Coquitlam has announced it is moving forward with significant upgrades to the Cedar Creek and Maple Creek drainage pump stations to address the increasing challenges posed by climate change, rising sea levels, and greater rainfall intensity.

The federal government will be investing $9.6 million in these two projects to mitigate flooding risks.

The Cedar Creek drainage pump station facilitates the transfer of water from Cedar Creek to the Pitt River.

Planned upgrades include:

  • Replacement of the existing submersible pumps with fish-passable axial-flow pumps.
  • Seismic retrofitting of the floodbox and intake structure.
  • Enhancements to aquatic ecosystems through riparian vegetation planting.
  • Installation of a permanent generator and upgrades to mechanical and electrical systems.

The Maple Creek drainage pump station discharges into the Coquitlam River; however, high river water levels often necessitate the closure of the flood box, leading to localized flooding, the release adds.

Planned upgrades include:

  • Replacement of the existing submersible pumps with a permanent, fish-friendly Archimedes screw-style pump station, combined with full replacement of the inlet structure.
  • Seismic and structural upgrades to the flood box, along with the construction of a new pump house installation of a permanent generator, and planting of riparian vegetation.

These upgrades aim to improve the station’s capacity to manage severe storms and high water levels, reducing flood risks and enhancing watershed health.
